I’ll keep this short, not-so-sweet, and to the point.
There are some (many?) decision-makers out there who are nervous about competitor research that relies on human intelligence, like B2B mystery shopping, for example. They worry about the legality and ethics behind it. They think that it’s the same as industrial espionage, which is a serious crime.
Much better to rely on an antiseptic solution like competitive intelligence software to compile facts and figures on your competitors – even though the information may be outdated. Don’t want to get your hands dirty with that slimy mystery shopping slop. Yeck!
What about privacy, you ask? And recordings of demos? There are jurisdictions that require two-person consent and some only one-person consent. One has to be aware of the local laws and regulations. Otherwise, recording a demo is perfectly legitimate.
Competitor Research, including B2B mystery shopping, is both legal and ethical and can provide your management team with insights and guidance that cannot and will not be obtained any other way than through the human interaction between a salesperson and a mystery shopper.
